Channa Dhal curry with Cabbage

This is a simple curry with channa dhal/ Kadala Parippu and cabbage, but a wonderful side dish for rice and rotis. You can reduce the amount of chilli powder and serve to kids as well. It is healthy and full of protein.

Ingredients
  1. Channa Dhal - 3/4 Cup or 150g
  2. Cabbage - 100 g
  3. Onion - 1 medium -Sliced
  4. Tomato - 1 medium - sliced
  5. Garlic - 3 Cloves
  6. Curry leaves - 1 Sprig
  7. Red chilli powder - 2 TSP or to taste
  8. Coriander powder - 3 TSP
  9. Turmeric Powder - 1/8 TSP
  10. Mustard seeds - 1/2 TSP
  11. Urad dhal - 1 TSP
  12. Cumin seeds - 1 TSP
  13. Asafoetida powder - 1/8 TSP
  14. Red dry chillies - 2 - broken into pieces
  15. 1 st extract of Coconut milk 50 ml/ 2 TSP coconut cream
  16. Salt - 1 TSP or to taste
  17. Cooking Oil - 2 TSP
  18. Coriander leaves - for garnishing (optional)
Instructions
  1. Pressure cook the channa dhal up to 2 whistles or boil in a 2 cups of water until soft in a pan.
  2. Meanwhile slice the cabbage and wash with running water and set aside.
  3. Heat the oil in a wok over a medium heat.
  4. Splutter the mustard seeds and add urad dhal, cumin seeds, dry red chillies and curry leaves.
  5. Add the onion and garlic cloves and saute until soft and translucent.
  6. Add sliced tomato and all the ground chilli, coriander and turmeric powders.
  7. Saute for 1 minutes. Now add washed cabbage and saute until cabbage are wilted.
  8. It will takes about 4 to 5 minutes.
  9. Add salt.
  10. Now add the cooked channa dhal and add enough water. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.
  11. Adjust the salt.
  12. Add the thick coconut milk and cook for further 2 minutes.
  13. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  14. Serve with rice.
Notes
  1. Adjust the Red chilli powder and salt to suit your taste.
